Games to face black protest

ABORIGINAL agitators are planning one of the biggest indigenous protests ever seen during Melbourne's Commonwealth Games.

High-profile activist Gary Foley foreshadowed a repeat of street marches seen in Brisbane during the 1982 Commonwealth Games.

Mr Foley said tough anti-protest laws before the Victorian Parliament would not stop Aborigines taking their message to the world.

He was speaking just minutes after Games Minister Justin Madden launched a strategy aimed at maximising Koori involvement in the $1.1 billion event next March. An indigenous taskforce appointed by the Government devised the policy which aims to help Koori businesses and artists and boost sports participation, among other goals.

Dissenters at the launch wore T-shirts emblazoned with "Black GST - Genocide to be stopped, Sovereignty to be restored, Treaty to be made".

A meeting has been called for Trades Hall next Wednesday.
