Freedom Fighter #1

Mr. Charles (Chicka) Dixon

Chicka Dixon, sometimes known as The Fox , has been an inspirational figure since the late 1950s in the struggle for justice. A reformed drinker, he worked in the trade union movement, the Foundation for Aboriginal Affairs with Charles Perkins in the late 1960s. He was at the forefront of the legendary 1972 Aboriginal Embassy demonstrations, where he played the important role of elder/mentor to the young radical activists.

An early indigenous employee of the Aboriginal Arts Board, he later (in 1982) became Chairman and led the push to establish major reforms in indigenous arts funding and adminstration. His work in the Arts Board created the foundations for todays spectacular international recognition of Aboriginal arts.

He was, and he remains, a great inspiration to younger generations of indigenous activists.
