'Thornbury Primary School students have won a David and Goliath battle to become
the state champions. Sports co-ordinator Lorraine Dunn said that their small school
of 160 students had defeated schools with as many as 800 students and teams
made up of senior players all from year 6.

"Our team has members from Years 6, 5 and 4" she said.

Ms Dunn said 1650 Victorian schools stared with a round robin competition and
were gradually eliminated. "We played a round robin in our own district in August
then went on to the zone finals and won the northern district match."

The quarter finals, played in Bendigo, saw the team triumph again.

"We played our semi and finals on the same day and won" Ms Dunn said.
"The kids were over the moon. There is a group of them who play on weekends
as well and they are very good players".'

What the paper doesn't say is that these are Koori kids!
